World Senior Citizens’ Day,

How Do We Age Gracefully? A look into the scope for Retirement in Kerala

How to age gracefully is a question that all of us reflect on—both for ourselves and for the seniors we care for. Seeking solutions to this important question, Bless organized a Conference on Graceful Ageing on World Senior Citizens’ Day, to highlight the importance of the topic.

The conference brought together generations—Bless residents were present to share their insights, industry experts, senior care specialists, & doctors came forth to share their clinical inputs, and MSW students were also present to understand the topic. All were united by a common goal: to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and best practices in geriatric care. It was a day of insightful discussions that highlighted the importance of a holistic, compassionate approach to ageing.

The event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Vijaya Kumar, a resident of Bless and the former Medical Superintendent of the Government Hospital, Aluva. His address set the tone for the conference, emphasizing dignity, independence, and wellbeing in later life.

This was followed by a compelling keynote address by Dr. Mathew Abraham, Senior Consultant – Neurology at Aster Medcity. Speaking on “Healthy Ageing in India: Scope, Gaps & Future,” Dr. Abraham offered deep insights into India’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. His thought-provoking session underscored the urgent need to strengthen geriatric care systems to meet the growing demands of an ageing population.

The conference explored several critical themes, including:
• Integrated Geriatric Care – addressing medical, mental, and social wellbeing together
• Dementia & Depression – understanding the dual challenges of ageing
• Rehabilitation, Palliative & End-of-Life Care – ensuring comfort, dignity, and quality of life

Overall, the conference reaffirmed Bless’s commitment to active ageing, informed care, and community-driven support. By fostering conversations between seniors, healthcare professionals, and future social work practitioners, the event highlighted that ageing gracefully is not just about adding years to life—but adding life, purpose, and wellbeing to those years.
